After attending the ‘Intensive Day with Anna Watkins’ it was exciting to be asked to continue working with the material we had been taught through out the day which would lead up to a performance. The process consisted of spread out rehearsals over a period of 4weeks at the Bernie Grant Art Centre. Before each rehearsal we would take a technique class lead by either Anna or Bawren Tavaziva which after the 4 weeks you could definately see had taken its toll on the dancers – for the better – everyone looked so much stronger. Both class styles very different but yet very similar at the same time. If you want a mind challenge aswell as physical I would strongly advise taking a class with Bawren...wow!
Being in a studio with Anna has definately opened my eyes to a different way of working. Every bit of material was created by herself and then taught to the dancers. For me, this definately has helped expand my movement vocabulary as I believe sometimes it is easy to fall into the trap of doing the same movement or movement that your comfortable with. So.... taking time to embody a whole new movement style which is technical, physical and emotional definately worked me to the max.
It was interesting ‘getting inside Anna’s head’ and getting to grips with the emotion behind the work but more so finding how you can relate your own personal experiences/thoughts to this and allow you to develop an individual character within the piece.
It wasn’t an easy process; with the physicality, super busy dancers and plenty of injuries but it was definately worth it. The atmosphere during the performance was... ‘fierce’ and I think the audience definately felt it. The feedback was amazing, and even certain people that drove four hours to come and see the show said it was worth every minute! I’ve had the honour to work with some amazing dancers and I'm sure that it's just the beginning for WatkinsDance!!!
